“First promotion of doctors trained at ULPGL: A major victory for health and education in the DRC”

ULPGL: The Free University of the Great Lakes countries trains its first doctors in Goma

On Saturday August 5, a historic event took place in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Free University of the Great Lakes Country (ULPGL) saw the first twenty-five doctors from its medical faculty take the Hippocratic Oath. This solemn moment was chaired by the president of the Provincial Council of the Order of Physicians of North Kivu, as well as by numerous health professionals.

For ULPGL, this day was memorable and demonstrated the university’s desire to train young Congolese in different fields, particularly medicine. The ULPGL medical faculty was opened in October 2014 and this first class of doctors has just obtained its number with the Order of Physicians.

This rapid result is a pleasant surprise for the graduates, who emphasize that it is not easy for a first class to obtain this recognition in such a short time. Among the qualified doctors, thirty-nine other applicants from different universities in North and South Kivu also took the Hippocratic oath during the same ceremony. These students come in particular from the University of Goma (UNIGOM), the Free University of the Great Lakes Countries (ULPGL), the University of Nature Conservation and Development of Kasugho (UCNDK), the University of Goma (UNIKIVU) and the Simon Kimbamgu University (USK) of Bukavu.

By taking their oath, these young doctors solemnly commit to serving not only Congolese patients, but also all of humanity. This new promotion of doctors constitutes a historic milestone for the health sector in the DRC, demonstrating ULPGL’s commitment to training competent and dedicated professionals.

This success also illustrates the importance of education and training in the development of the country. Doctors trained by ULPGL will help improve access to health care in the DRC, a country that faces many challenges in this area.

By training its first doctors, ULPGL positions itself as a benchmark higher education institution in the Great Lakes region. This encouraging achievement is a source of pride for the university and demonstrates its commitment to academic excellence and the training of quality professionals.

ULPGL thus continues to play a crucial role in the training of young Congolese, by offering them study opportunities in different fields, essential to the development of the country.
