The death of Henri Konan Bédié, former Ivorian head of state, marked the Ivorian political scene. At the age of 89, he leaves behind an important political legacy, notably as leader of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI). In this article, we will return to the memories he left with Ivorians and his key role in Ivorian politics.
Henri Konan Bédié leaves a significant political imprint in Côte d’Ivoire. As leader of the PDCI, he left a strong political party which is currently preparing for local elections. However, it remains to be seen who his successor will be and whether he will be able to assert himself against other political parties.
For many years, Henri Konan Bédié remained a key player in Ivorian politics. Alongside Alassane Ouattara and Laurent Gbagbo, he was considered one of the “big three” of the Ivorian political scene. His electorate was solidly positioned and he embodied a large part of the Ivorian political landscape.
However, the debate around Ivoirianness has tarnished its image. This concept, which divided Côte d’Ivoire, was used politically and had important consequences on the history of the country. Eligibility conditions for the presidency based on Ivorianness have created tensions and divisions within Ivorian society.
Despite this, Henri Konan Bédié has retained an undeniable influence on the national political scene and within the PDCI. He has long hoped to return to power, notably with his Daoukro appeal, but realistic about his chances of success, he has accepted that his time is over.
The PDCI, as the oldest political party in Côte d’Ivoire, will certainly survive the death of its emblematic leader. Although plagued by internal struggles, the party has already overcome several crises in the past. The challenge now will be to see how the succession will take place and whether a single clan will be able to impose itself or whether a more collective dynamic will emerge.
Beyond his political role, Henri Konan Bédié was recognized as a “kingmaker”, having succeeded in helping those with whom he allied to win presidential elections. He also played a role in reconciliation and peace efforts in Ivory Coast, although his methods may have been controversial.
The disappearance of Henri Konan Bédié leaves a void in the Ivorian political scene. His political legacy and career have left their mark on the country and will continue to influence Ivorian politics in the years to come.
