“Political crisis in Niger: An ECOWAS delegation led by Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto begins negotiations to restore constitutional order”

A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently in Niger to begin negotiations with the putschists who overthrew the government in place. This delegation, led by former Nigerian President Abdulsalami Abubakar, includes among its members the Sultan of Sokoto, a leading figure in the religious and traditional field. This visit marks the first intervention by ECOWAS since the coup d’état in Niger last July.

Abdulsalami Abubakar is a key player in Nigeria’s democratic transition. After a long military career, he succeeded General Sani Abacha as leader of the country in 1998. Less than a year later, he organized multi-party elections and transferred power to President Olusegun Obasanjo, democratically elected in 1999. Now 81 years old, Abdulsalami Abubakar still chairs the National Peace Committee, which is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of elections in Nigeria.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, is also a man of influence. After a military career and participation in several military operations, he became Sultan of Sokoto following the death of his brother in 2006. As spiritual leader of the Qadiriyya Sufi order and president of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria , it plays an important role in the political and religious life of the country. His cultural proximity to Niger, his military experience and his aura as a political and religious leader make him a major asset in this mediation mission.

The visit of this ECOWAS delegation to Niger aims to find a peaceful solution to the political crisis that has been plaguing the country since the coup. Discussions with the putschists will allow us to better understand their demands and seek compromises to restore constitutional order. The international community is closely monitoring developments in Niger and supporting ECOWAS mediation efforts.

In conclusion, the ECOWAS delegation led by Abdulsalami Abubakar and including the Sultan of Sokoto plays a crucial role in resolving the political crisis in Niger. Their expertise and political and religious influence can help restore constitutional order in the country and promote regional stability. The international community eagerly awaits the results of these negotiations.
