Nearly a thousand new nurses were sworn in on Monday July 31 in Kinshasa, during the national day of the nursing profession in the DRC. This ceremony was an opportunity for the president of the National Order of Nurses, Komba Djeko, to advocate for the effective implementation of universal health coverage in the country. According to him, this measure would allow hospitals to have constant access to medicines and healthcare equipment, thus restoring the nobility of the nursing profession.
Health Minister Samuel-Roger Mulamba also stressed the importance of treating patients with dignity and humanity. He encouraged the new nurses to uphold their oath by providing quality care with respect and compassion for patients.
This swearing-in was an opportunity to award certificates of merit and loyalty to certain nurses who have distinguished themselves in their professional practice.
This ceremony takes place in a context where health in the DRC faces many challenges. The implementation of universal health coverage would not only guarantee equitable access to care for all Congolese citizens, but also fight against the dishonorable and humiliating practices that can sometimes be associated with the nursing profession.
It is therefore essential that government authorities and health sector stakeholders fully commit to the establishment of universal health coverage in the DRC. This will strengthen the nursing profession, improve the quality of care and ensure equitable access to health services for all Congolese.
