Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play an essential role in economic growth and job creation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This is why the government has decided to support and encourage them to develop. In this dynamic, Congolese civil society organizations, such as the Cadre de Concertation de la Femme Congolaise (CAFCO) and the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Congo (AFEECO), were funded by UN-Women to raise awareness among market traders in different regions of the country.
The project to reform and disseminate legal texts in favor of women, named “Support Project for the Development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises” (PADMPME), aims to support the growth of SMEs by offering opportunities for entrepreneurship to young people and women, and improving the business environment. Traders in Congolese markets thus benefited from training on advocacy, state requirements for formal commerce, as well as the importance of maintaining a clean environment for their own health.
However, speakers at a press conference stressed that the registration system for traders, supposed to provide them with the legal documents necessary to comply with the country’s laws, has encountered difficulties. Despite this, traders were motivated and encouraged to comply with state requirements, in particular by obtaining the Trade and Securities Register (RCCM) and national identification, as well as provincial licenses.
CAFCO members also involved traditional authorities, such as customary chiefs, in this mobilization in favor of women traders. Awareness raising and training enabled traders to acquire advocacy skills, in order to defend their interests with the country’s authorities.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the civil society organizations and requested their continued support, as they still have a lot to learn to develop their business activities.
This project to support SMEs in the DRC is therefore an important initiative to promote inclusive economic growth, reduce poverty and promote gender equality. SMEs play a key role in sustainable development and provide economic opportunities for women and young people.
In conclusion, it is essential to support the development of SMEs in the DRC in order to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and reduce poverty. Awareness and training initiatives led by civil society organizations help build the capacity of traders and help them comply with legal requirements. It is important to continue to support these initiatives and promote entrepreneurship of women and youth in the country
