“Growing concern in the DRC: journalists threatened during political coverage”

The growing threat against journalists during political coverage in the DRC

The NGO Journalist in Danger (JED) recently expressed deep concern about the increase in acts of intolerance and physical violence against journalists in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), perpetrated by political activists. These incidents were recorded during coverage of political activities in recent days.

Among the cases denounced, we find that of Franck Kalonji, journalist-reporter for Actu7.cd, who was violently attacked during a meeting organized by the ECIDE party, led by the opponent Martin Fayulu, on July 29, 2023, on the Buddha land in N’djili/Kinshasa.

However, violence against journalists is not limited to the capital. In Kananga, around ten journalists in the convoy of opponent Delly Sesanga were targeted, injuring some of them. Journalists Jean-Pierre Kayembe, Elysée Odia, Trésor Kalafayi, Dénon Kefula, Didier Kebongo as well as six other cameramen were victims of these attacks.

In Kasai, three journalists, Gilbert Ngandu, Martin Nyambo and Papy Ngalamulume, were arrested by the police while covering an unauthorized protest march on July 26.

These attacks are a flagrant violation of press freedom and the safety of journalists in the exercise of their profession. JED calls on political actors to take their responsibilities and condemn these acts of violence. It is imperative that political leaders urge their activists to exercise restraint and respect the crucial role of the media in democracy.

JED also encourages journalists who are victims of these attacks to contact the competent judicial authorities to seek compensation and justice. The protection of journalists and respect for their freedom are essential elements to ensure a democratic and informed society.

It is urgent that the Congolese authorities take concrete measures to guarantee the safety of media professionals and create an environment conducive to the exercise of their profession while respecting fundamental rights. Press freedom is a central pillar of any democracy and must be preserved at all costs. The international community must also support actions to protect journalists in the DRC and press for those responsible for these attacks to be brought to justice.
