“Democratic Republic of Congo: Presentation of the 2024 draft budget, an increase of 24.7% to support national priorities”

“Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde submitted the draft budget for 2024 to the National Assembly, marking an important step in the management of public finances in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This budget, estimated at 16.6 billion of US dollars, represents an increase of 24.7% compared to the previous budget year.

During this presentation, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s priorities, such as defense, free education and free maternity. These essential sectors will benefit from particular attention in the allocation of budgetary resources. Indeed, the government is committed to increasing the resources allocated to Defense, to continuing the implementation of free education which has already borne fruit, and to guaranteeing universal health coverage.

At the same time, the 2024 budget also devotes significant resources to the reforms underway in the country. It thus aims to diversify the national economy by allocating more resources to agriculture, fishing, livestock breeding and industry. Emphasis is also placed on infrastructure development, particularly with the creation of new special economic zones.

The government also intends to continue its investments in the Local Development Program for 145 territories (PDL-145T), with particular attention paid to agricultural service roads. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the country’s rural and agricultural development.

The tabling of the draft budget was welcomed by the President of the National Assembly, Christophe Mboso, who underlined the importance of providing the Democratic Republic of Congo with a budget that meets the expectations of the population.

This draft budget for 2024 therefore reflects government priorities and demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese government to pursue the reforms necessary to ensure the economic and social development of the country.”
