Democratic Republic of Congo: An ambitious budget for the 2024 financial year in favor of economic development, security and health

The budget for the 2024 financial year in the Democratic Republic of Congo was tabled by the Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, in the National Assembly. This draft Finance Law amounts to 40.463 billion Congolese francs, or approximately 16.6 billion US dollars, which represents an increase of 24.7% compared to the budget of the previous year.

In this draft budget, priorities have been clearly identified. The defense sector, for example, is allocated considerable resources to meet the country’s security needs. Health is also highlighted, with financial support for Universal Health Coverage and free maternity. These measures aim to improve access to medical care for all Congolese.

The government also emphasizes the diversification of the national economy, granting additional resources to agriculture, fishing and livestock, as well as industry. Special economic zones will be created with the aim of boosting the country’s economic development.

Furthermore, the government is paying particular attention to the modernization of public administration, by providing for an increase in salary inclusion and an improvement in the working conditions of civil servants. Scientific research is also supported, with a budget allocated up to 3% to promote innovation and the development of Congolese products on the market.

Finally, the electoral process also benefits from significant funds, in order to guarantee its smooth running. Resources will be allocated to local and senatorial elections, responding to the demands of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

This draft budget for the 2024 financial year demonstrates the Congolese government’s desire to put in place concrete measures to support the country’s development, both economically, socially and politically. Let us hope that it will be adopted and implemented effectively, for the well-being and future of all Congolese citizens.
