Earthquake in Al Haouz: Morocco in shock
A violent earthquake shook the Al Haouz region in Morocco, causing widespread damage and disrupting the lives of residents. The provisional toll shows nearly 3,000 dead and more than 5,000 injured. Among the most affected cities is Marrakech, which recorded 18 deaths and suffered significant damage to its architectural heritage.
The medina of Marrakech, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, particularly suffered from this earthquake. Many traditional houses were destroyed, particularly in the historic Mellah district, a former Jewish quarter. Residents, some of whom have lost their homes, are forced to live in precarious conditions.
Among them, Bouchra and Rachida, who find themselves forced to sleep outside, in a square frequented by many passers-by. Their building having been badly damaged, it now represents a danger and they can no longer access it. Despite the reception solutions offered by the Moroccan authorities, they prefer to stay close to their belongings, particularly their refrigerators.
The temporary camp set up at the August 20 stadium is however specially designed to accommodate the victims. But the latter prefer to stay close to their homes, fearing theft and the possibility that the owners will not rehouse them once the reconstruction work is completed.
However, some residents express their annoyance at this situation. They deplore the fact that some people take advantage of the assistance offered and then resell it, thus fueling a black market. However, the Moroccan authorities have promised to rehouse the victims in decent conditions.
The Moroccan government is already working on a reconstruction plan aimed at rehabilitating destroyed housing. However, this complex task requires significant time and resources.
This devastating earthquake reminds us of the importance of prevention and solidarity in such situations. The Moroccan people and the international community are mobilizing to provide assistance to the victims and participate in the reconstruction of the Al Haouz region. In this difficult time, solidarity is essential to allow residents to return to normal life and rebuild their future.
