The Forum Katanga Business Meeting (KBM), held in Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, brought together mining operators and experts to discuss ways to unlock the country’s economic potential. Under the theme “Unlocking the economic potential of the DRC for sustainable and equitable growth”, participants addressed various topics such as economic diversification, investment in human capital and the creation of a favorable business environment.
Government priorities to unlock economic potential:
The Minister of State, Minister of Planning, Judith Suminwa, highlighted some of the government’s priorities to unlock the economic potential of the DRC. She emphasized the revenge of the soil on the subsoil, highlighting the agro-industry and energy sector. The transformation of the country’s wealth into sustainable assets and the diversification of the economy were also mentioned. The government is also committed to improving the business climate and promoting entrepreneurship and regional integration.
The experience of the 2002 mining code:
Professor Mabi Mulumba raised the question of the effectiveness of partnerships concluded in the mining sector and highlighted the difficulties encountered by the Congolese government with the 2002 mining code. He pleaded for better diversification of the economy and the involvement of specialist experts in the negotiations of mining contracts.
Recommendations from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burundi:
Ezéchiel Nibigira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burundi, shared his recommendations to unlock the economic potential of the DRC. He stressed the importance of investing in the country’s security to protect its wealth, creating a favorable business environment by fighting corruption, and developing industry to process raw materials locally.
The contribution of the United Nations Economic Commission:
Professor Mastaki of the United Nations Economic Commission highlighted the support of ECCAS in the process of economic transformation of the DRC. He notably mentioned the involvement of ECCAS in the value chain of electric batteries.
