Title: The IMF mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the review of the economic program
Introduction :
A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently completed its mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of the preparation for the 5th review of the program between the DRC and the IMF. This technical mission, led by Calixte Ahokpossi, IMF mission head, welcomed the progress made by the Congolese government under the leadership of Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde. The program review is scheduled for the last two weeks of October.
Encouraging progress according to the IMF:
During the meeting with the Prime Minister, the IMF delegation highlighted the encouraging progress made by the Congolese government over the past two years. Calixte Ahokpossi said significant progress has been made since the start of the program, which is now in its 5th review. He also clarified that the next review is planned for next year to finalize the entire program.
Participation of members of the Congolese government:
In addition to the Prime Minister, several members of the Congolese government participated in the meeting with the IMF delegation. The Minister of State in charge of the Budget, the Minister of Finance, the Vice-Ministers of Budget and Finance, as well as the Governor of the Central Bank of Congo all took part in this working session. This participation demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese government to cooperate with the IMF to achieve the economic objectives set by the program.
Three-year agreement with the IMF:
In July 2021, the DRC signed a three-year agreement with the IMF, which includes an Extended Credit Facility worth US$1.52 billion. This agreement aims to support the country’s economic and financial reforms to promote sustainable and equitable growth. The IMF mission in the DRC is part of the follow-up to this agreement and makes it possible to assess the progress made by the country in implementing the planned reforms.
Conclusion :
The recent IMF technical mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo made it possible to assess the progress made by the country within the framework of the economic program. Exchanges between the IMF delegation and the Congolese government demonstrated the encouraging progress made over the past two years. This cooperation between the DRC and the IMF aims to support the country’s economic and financial reforms and promote sustainable and equitable growth. The next review of the program scheduled for October will be an opportunity to take stock of the evolution of the Congolese economic situation.
