“Confiscation of a journalist’s equipment in Kisangani: when press freedom is violated”

The confiscation of a journalist’s work equipment in Kisangani: an attack on press freedom

The Observatory for Press Freedom in Africa (OLPA) has expressed its disagreement following the confiscation of the work equipment of Blaise Mussa, journalist at Radio Television Amani, a radio station based in Kisangani, in the province of Tshopo in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This incident occurred on September 8, 2023, when Blaise Mussa’s equipment, including his phone, was seized by a police officer on the orders of Mr. Sam Yakusu, chief of staff of the provincial governor. The journalist was reporting on a protest rally by financial management agents who were demanding payment of their salary arrears.

Faced with the journalist’s refusal to delete the images from his report, the chief of staff ordered the confiscation of his equipment. Fortunately, thanks to the pressure exerted by the demonstrators, the material was able to be returned to the journalist.

This confiscation is clearly an attack on freedom of the press, a fundamental right guaranteed by Congolese legislation as well as international legal instruments relating to human rights. OLPA strongly condemns this act and urges the provincial authorities of Tshopo to respect and promote the exercise of press freedom throughout the province.

It is essential to emphasize the importance of press freedom in a democratic society. Journalists play a vital role in reporting the facts and ensuring transparency in public affairs. The confiscation of a journalist’s equipment is not only a violation of their rights, but also a threat to freedom of expression and democracy.

It is crucial that responsible authorities take measures to guarantee the safety and freedom of journalists in the exercise of their profession. The protection of freedom of the press is an essential condition for the proper functioning of a democratic society and for respect for the fundamental rights of citizens.

In conclusion, the confiscation of a journalist’s work equipment in Kisangani is a regrettable attack on press freedom. It is imperative that provincial authorities respond by condemning this act and taking measures to guarantee the safety and freedom of journalists in the exercise of their profession. Freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society, and it is our duty to protect and promote it.
