Tensions in Mali between the army and ex-rebels from the north: What are the challenges for the future of the country?

Mali is once again facing tensions with ex-rebels in the north of the country, raising fears of a resurgence of hostilities. Fighting has recently resumed between the Malian army and groups from the north, and both parties are blaming each other for this escalation. This situation calls into question the Algiers peace agreements signed in 2015.

In a press release, the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), representing the ex-rebels, called on the inhabitants of the region to join the fighting against the Malian armed forces and their Russian allies. Colonel Moulay Ag Sidi Mola, spokesperson for the CMA, declared that these latest events mark the start of a new conflict.

The CMA accuses the Malian army and Wagner’s Russian mercenaries of being at the origin of this resumption of hostilities. She affirms that the Azawadian national army has developed short and long term resistance strategies. The ex-rebels also call on civilians to avoid positions held by the armed forces and Wagner.

This statement from the CMA is part of a communication battle with the Malian government, which is accused of intentionally confusing it with terrorist groups. The CMA has created a military affairs information and communication unit to avoid any confusion with other external actors.

This new escalation of tensions in Mali raises many questions about the future of the country and the viability of the peace agreements. It is essential to closely monitor developments and understand the geopolitical issues underlying these clashes. Mali remains a fragile country, caught between security challenges and the search for lasting political stability.
