“Kanyaruchinya: The challenges of refugees and the solutions to help them in North Kivu in the DRC”

Article: The challenges of refugees in Kanyaruchinya, in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Introduction :
The Kanyaruchinya refugee camp, located in the Nyirangongo territory, in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, faces many challenges. Tens of thousands of people, having fled the violence caused by the M23 rebels, live there in precarious conditions. This camp faces problems such as lack of access to food, contagious diseases and violence. In this article, we will explore the difficulties encountered by the refugees of Kanyaruchinya and the solutions envisaged to improve their situation.

Deplorable living conditions:
Nearly 47,000 households live in the Kanyaruchinya camp, in deplorable conditions. The lack of adequate housing, lack of access to sufficient food and the risk of contagious diseases such as measles and cholera make daily life extremely difficult for refugees. Furthermore, persistent violence and insecurity in the region further exacerbate their vulnerability.

The tragic consequences of illness and violence:
The tragic consequences of the precarious living conditions in the Kanyaruchinya camp are unfortunately visible. Lack of hygiene and bad weather have already caused the death of 660 people, victims of diseases linked to dirt and unsanitary conditions. Additionally, refugees are often exposed to violence, which leads to physical and psychological trauma.

The intervention of FONAREV:
Faced with these challenges, the National Fund for Reparations for Victims of Sexual Violence Related to Armed Conflicts and Crimes Against the Peace of Humanity (FONAREV) took the initiative of visiting the Kanyaruchinya camp. The delegation led by Lucien Lundula Lolatui, Director General of FONAREV, expressed its concern about the deplorable living conditions of refugees.

Assistance programs currently being implemented:
FONAREV is committed to implementing aid programs for Kanyaruchinya refugees. These programs aim to provide adequate housing, care for school-age children and support women victims of violence. The objective is to allow refugees to live in more acceptable conditions from a humanitarian point of view.

Meeting with the active forces of the province:
In addition to its visit to the Kanyaruchinya camp, the FONAREV delegation also met the active forces of the North Kivu province. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss urgent actions to be taken to respond to the humanitarian crisis and the continued presence of armed groups such as the M23.

Conclusion :
The Kanyaruchinya camp in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo faces many challenges. The refugees living there face deplorable living conditions, marked by a lack of adequate housing, lack of access to food and contagious diseases. However, FONAREV’s intervention offers hope to refugees by setting up aid programs to improve their situation. It is essential to continue to support these initiatives in order to allow the refugees of Kanyaruchinya to return to a more dignified and humane life.
