“Intensive training of police officers in the DRC to guarantee the security of the next elections”

Police officers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are currently benefiting from intensive training provided by the UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO). In total, 1,730 police officers, including 1,000 from the town of Beni and 700 from Oicha, are participating in this training session, which began on September 8 and will last 3 months.

The objective of this training is to strengthen the operational capacities of the police in securing the electoral process which will take place in December 2023. Agents of the Congolese national police (PNC) are trained in the maintenance and restoration of public order ( MROP), as well as professional intervention gestures and techniques (GTPI). They will also learn to manage a hostile crowd, to intervene during political meetings and to deal with possible excesses.

This training is crucial for police officers who are in direct contact with the population. It aims to give them the skills necessary to ensure security during the next elections in their district. Senior Commissioner Michel Mbala, commander of the PNC of the Oicha District, welcomed this initiative, emphasizing its importance for community policing.

Police officers will learn various defense and arrest techniques, as well as self-control in all circumstances. They will be trained to act with discernment while preserving the physical integrity of those arrested. This training also emphasizes respect for human rights and the adoption of professional behavior.

MONUSCO plays an essential role here by providing quality training to Congolese police officers. This collaboration between the UN and local authorities helps to strengthen the capacities of law enforcement and ensure security during the electoral process. By equipping police officers with the necessary skills, it is hoped that the upcoming elections in the DRC will take place in a safe and secure environment.

The training of police officers is a crucial issue to ensure stability and democracy in the DRC. Thanks to this MONUSCO initiative, law enforcement will be better prepared to face the security challenges linked to the elections. This constitutes an important step towards consolidating the rule of law in the DRC and guaranteeing the security of citizens.
