“Engaged activists: when civil society turns to politics to change the world”

In recent years, we have observed a growing trend of activists engaged in civil society who decide to take the plunge and enter politics. These civil society actors, accustomed to campaigning for change through citizen movements, see in politics another platform to realize their ideals and improve the living conditions of their compatriots.

Floribert Anzuluni, emblematic figure of the Filimbi citizen movement, is now a candidate for president following his nomination by the Citizen Alternative party. According to him, this political commitment stems from the observation that activism within civil society is not enough to truly change the situation in the country. He therefore believes that it is important to get politically involved in order to really have an impact on government policies and decisions.

For his part, Espoir Ngalukiye, former member of the Lucha citizen movement, decided to run in the legislative elections under the banner of the opponent Moïse Katumbi’s party, Ensemble pour la République. He explains that politics offers him the possibility of continuing the same fight, but this time within institutions. He also highlights the failure of the current political class and believes that we must not disappoint the people.

However, some activists remain convinced that civil society plays a fundamental role in building a strong and demanding society. Lucha activist Stewart Muhindo highlights the importance of continuing to build an active civil society, as this will influence politicians and push them to be responsible and accountable to the people.

It is legitimate to question the future of these activists who enter politics. Will they move away from their ideals and conform to the constraints and compromises inherent to political life? Some observers fear that these activists will lose their independence and their ability to influence public debate.

It is undeniable that political engagement can be an effective means of bringing about concrete changes in society. However, it is also important to preserve and strengthen civil society, because it plays an essential role in democratic monitoring and in demanding accountability from politicians.

Ultimately, whether through civil society or politics, the end goal remains the same: to work to improve the living conditions of citizens and build a fairer and more equitable society. Whether these activists choose the path of civil society or politics, they demonstrate an unwavering desire to move the lines and create a better future for their country.
