“The power battle at the CENI: progressive forces facing nostalgic resistance”

The Congolese political landscape is constantly evolving, but this transition is not without resistance. While some progressive politicians aspire to a modernized democracy, others prefer to cling to outdated methods. This is particularly the case of certain former allies of Joseph Kabila, who are trying to manipulate the current electoral administration to preserve their influence. Unfortunately, these nostalgic politicians managed to rally certain Catholic and Protestant churches to their cause, thus creating a tense atmosphere between the CENI, the opposition and the government.

One of the main protagonists of this situation is Corneille Nangaa, the former president of the CENI. Since his departure, he has acted in a hostile and vindictive manner towards the current leadership of the CENI and its leader, Denis Kadima. He seems to be driven by deep resentment towards the administration of Félix Tshisekedi, particularly because of his efforts to recover a mining concession illegally acquired by Nangaa. The latter thus seeks to discredit the electoral process by denouncing alleged electoral fraud, in the hope of compromising the possible re-election of Tshisekedi.

Nangaa also claims to be harmed by his personal security since his departure from the CENI. He accuses Denis Kadima of having taken charge of his personal care, despite the fact that he chose to actively enter politics and voluntarily renounce these advantages. It appears that Nangaa is jealous of the success of Kadima, whose work is praised both in DR Congo and internationally. Indeed, Kadima works to professionalize the electoral institution and improve the working conditions of agents, achievements which attract a certain amount of jealousy and resentment.

Additionally, another key player in the situation is Toto Mabuki Totokani, national executive secretary of CENI. He presents himself as the person responsible for organizing elections in DR Congo, although he is often criticized for behavior that does not respect the internal rules and laws of the electoral commission. These failings ultimately led to his sanction, due to his inability to maintain harmony and mutual respect within the organization.

The current situation within the CENI reflects the power struggles and political games taking place in DR Congo. Retrograde forces persist in their desire to preserve their personal interests and maintain criticized practices, while progressive forces seek to modernize the electoral system and consolidate Congolese democracy. It is essential to closely monitor developments in this situation and ensure that it does not compromise the democratic future of the country.
