Devastating earthquake in Morocco: Solidarity is organized to help the victims
On the night of September 8 to 9, 2023, Morocco was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 according to the American seismological service. This natural disaster has wreaked havoc, with the toll currently standing at 2,497 dead and 2,476 injured, according to the latest figures published by the Ministry of the Interior.
The images of destroyed villages and rescuers working to search for survivors among the rubble shocked the country. In the village of Imi N’Tala, near Amizmiz, women in tears helplessly witness the recovery of the bodies of their missing loved ones.
Faced with this tragedy, solidarity is being organized to help the victims. Morocco has accepted help from four countries: Spain, Great Britain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Rescue teams and equipment were dispatched to the scene to support rescue operations and provide medical assistance to the injured.
In addition, many local and international associations are mobilizing to provide their support. The Amal association, based in Marrakech, founded by Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen, is mobilizing to help the victims. Volunteers go to the scene to distribute food, medicine and essential equipment.
Alongside relief operations, experts and researchers are also interested in the political and diplomatic aspect of this disaster. Jean-François Corty, associate researcher at the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (Iris) and vice-president of Médecins du monde, highlights the humanitarian issues of this situation.
On the ground, rescuers continue to search the rubble in search of survivors. The task is arduous in the most isolated villages, but the hope of finding lives saved under the rubble persists.
In this difficult period, Morocco is facing a painful ordeal, but national and international solidarity is showing its strength. Testimonies of support and help are pouring in from everywhere, demonstrating true solidarity with the victims of this devastating earthquake.
In time, the country will recover from this tragedy and rebuild the affected areas. But it will take time to heal the wounds and recover from this ordeal. In the meantime, the Moroccan population continues to demonstrate courage and resilience in the face of adversity, showing the world the unity and strength that characterize this great country.
The road to recovery will be long, but Morocco will not be alone in this ordeal. International solidarity continues and will allow victims to regain hope and dignity.
