The African continent faces a major challenge: that of adapting to climate change. According to a recent report from the Global Center for Adaptation, Africa needs more than $100 billion per year to finance adaptation projects. This estimate is based on an in-depth analysis of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) submitted by African countries to the United Nations.
Currently, funding flows dedicated to adaptation to climate change in Africa average $11.4 billion per year, which is clearly insufficient to meet needs. Indeed, only 28 African countries have included cost estimates for adaptation projects in their NDCs. The other 26 countries have not yet presented estimates, leading the Global Adaptation Center to estimate that Africa’s real financing needs for adaptation to climate change are largely underestimated. .
