“Insecurity and displacement of populations: The alarming situation in the Grand Bandundu area and in Kinshasa”

The security and humanitarian situation in the Grand Bandundu area and part of the city province of Kinshasa remains alarming due to the activism of the “Mobondo” militiamen born from the conflict between the Teke and Yaka communities. According to the Minister of National Defense and Veterans, Jean-Pierre Bemba, numerous population movements are reported and new “Mobondo” recruits continue to be trained.

The Kwamouth region and its surroundings are particularly affected by this recurring insecurity. A recent report presented by the Minister of Defense indicates that almost half of the villages of Kwamouth, or 74 out of 140, have been under the control of the Mobondo militia since June 2022. This armed presence is sowing terror in the region, leading to consequences directly on the daily life of the population.

The start of the school year in particular was disrupted in the town of Kwamouth, where no children showed up to school during the first week. Parents have held back their children for fear of kidnappings which are becoming more and more frequent near the city. The local population is seriously concerned about this growing insecurity, which affects not only their security, but also their access to education and other basic services.

Faced with this situation, the authorities must take urgent measures to restore security and stability in the region. It is essential to strengthen security measures, intensify operations against Mobondo militiamen and put in place mechanisms to protect civilians. Additionally, actions to promote reconciliation and resolve the conflict between the Teke and Yaka communities must be undertaken in order to prevent further tensions and violence.

The situation in the Greater Bandundu area and in Kinshasa is a major concern for the DRC and the international community. The joint efforts of national authorities, security forces and humanitarian actors are essential to put an end to this insecurity and allow local populations to live in peace and security.
