The abolition of visas between the DRC, Kenya and Tanzania: a limited advantage for economic operators

The recent decision to remove the entry visa between the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania has sparked many reactions. While this measure makes travel easier for ordinary citizens, it seems that economic operators cannot take full advantage of this opportunity.

David Katumbi, an economic operator from North Kivu, raises the fact that the DRC, due to security instability in its eastern part, has few products to export to these two countries in the sub-region. Thus, this abolition of the visa only really benefits ordinary Congolese who wish to travel or visit their family in neighboring countries.

According to Katumbi, this measure mainly benefits Kenya and Tanzania, which now have free rein to expand their economic activities without having to worry about visa constraints. Indeed, by removing this restriction, these two countries have the opportunity to move their economic boundaries and explore new commercial opportunities in the DRC.

However, it is important to note that the abolition of visas between these countries cannot be considered a miracle solution to stimulate the Congolese economy. Security concerns persist in some regions, significantly limiting the DRC’s ability to produce and export.

The ease of migration offered by the abolition of the visa is undoubtedly a step towards greater regional integration and increased cooperation between these countries. However, it is necessary to create an environment conducive to investment and resolve security issues to enable economic operators to truly take advantage of this new opportunity.

In conclusion, the abolition of visas between the DRC, Kenya and Tanzania presents advantages for ordinary citizens but only partially benefits Congolese economic operators. Security challenges and instability in certain regions limit the DRC’s ability to export its products to these neighboring countries. It is therefore imperative to put in place additional measures to encourage economic development in the region and so that this abolition of the visa has a more significant impact on the Congolese economy.
