Armed attacks in the villages of Djugu always make headlines. Horror continues to rage in this region of Ituri, with tragic consequences for the local population. At least twenty-four people lost their lives and around ten others were injured during a series of attacks perpetrated by the URDPC/CODECO and ZAIRE militias.
Tensions began last Wednesday, when armed Zaire militia fighters attacked the villages of Kalangabgbo and Isiro, killing five innocent farmers who were in their fields. In retaliation, URDPC/CODECO attackers attacked the village of Loko Mbidjo, causing the death of thirteen people, including women and Zaire militiamen. This escalation of violence also led to the burning of many houses.
The next day, during the night from Friday to Saturday, the URDPC/CODECO attackers continued their attacks, killing six people, including three children and two women, in the village of Lona Londrikpa. These barbaric acts only worsen the already precarious situation in the region, where the population lives in constant fear of armed attacks.
The army called the attacks “unacceptable” and called on the militias to respect the ongoing peace process. She also warned that she would not hesitate to retaliate if necessary. The authorities are seeking to protect the population and stabilize the situation, but it is clear that stronger measures must be taken to put an end to this incessant violence.
These attacks in the villages of Djugu are a stark reminder of the fragility of the security situation in the DRC. Efforts to bring peace and stability to the region must be intensified, with particular attention paid to the demobilization of armed groups and the protection of civilians.
It is crucial that the international community mobilizes to support the Congolese authorities in their efforts to end these atrocities. Peace and security are essential elements of development and the well-being of local populations. It is time to put an end to this violence and give peace a chance to settle in the Djugu region.
