Jean-Marc Kabund: the former interim president of the UDPS awaiting his fate
Jean-Marc Kabund, former interim president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), finds himself in a delicate situation. Indeed, the Court of Cassation has just postponed the date of the delivery of its verdict, which was initially scheduled for today. This postponement raises a lot of expectations and questions about the future of Kabund.
Twelve counts
The former vice-president of the National Assembly faces twelve counts, including insulting Parliament, the government of the Republic, insulting the head of state and spreading false rumors. Serious accusations that could have serious consequences for Kabund.
Unwavering support from A.Ch activists
Despite these charges against him, activists of his party, the Alliance for Change (A.Ch), continue to believe in his innocence and hope for his acquittal. During the trial, three years in prison were requested against Kabund by the public prosecutor. However, his lawyer, Me Georges Lutula, pleaded for his total acquittal, saying that no element constituting offenses has been proven.
A dissenting voice
Jean-Marc Kabund joined the opposition in July 2022 after being expelled from the presidential party and resigning from his position as first vice-president of the National Assembly. He denounced the ruling party’s lack of a clear vision, denouncing the notorious incompetence, institutionalized mismanagement and predation at the top of the state. Severe criticisms which were reiterated during his trial.
The suspense continues
As the wait drags on, the outcome of this case remains uncertain. Jean-Marc Kabund will know his fate in the coming days, when the Court of Cassation will deliver its verdict. In the meantime, the activists of the A.Ch continue to support their leader and hope for a favorable decision.
