China steps in as mediator to resolve political crisis in Niger

Title: China wants to play a mediating role in the political crisis in Niger

Introduction: The People’s Republic of China has expressed its desire to help resolve the political crisis that has shaken Niger for several weeks. Chinese Ambassador to Niger, Jing Feng, met with the Nigerien Prime Minister designated by the ruling junta, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, to discuss China’s engagement as a mediator in this crisis.

China’s role as mediator: According to Jing Feng, China wishes to play a role of good offices and mediator to find a political solution to the Nigerien crisis. He underlines that Beijing is ready to support solutions to end the crisis which follow “African-style” methods. This involvement of China in resolving the political crisis in Niger is all the more important to protect its interests in the country.

Chinese interests in Niger: China maintains close collaboration with Niger in several strategic sectors, notably that of hydrocarbons. The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) group is the main Chinese player in the exploitation of oil deposits in the Agadem region. In addition, China is also involved in the construction of a pipeline connecting the Agadem reserves to the port of Sèmè in Benin. These projects are essential for China, and the current political crisis in Niger could have an impact on their realization.

Risks for Chinese interests: Faced with the threat of military intervention by ECOWAS in Niger, the political stability of the country is jeopardized. This could pose risks for Chinese interests present in the country. Indeed, any political instability could compromise CNPC’s projects and delay the construction of the pipeline. China therefore wishes to actively contribute to resolving the crisis in order to protect its economic interests in Niger.

Conclusion: China shows its commitment to playing a mediating role in the political crisis shaking Niger. In addition to its economic interests in the country, China sees the importance of preserving political stability to ensure the smooth running of its projects. China’s contribution to resolving the Niger crisis could be a step towards a peaceful settlement and lasting stability in the country.
