The DRC offers an ambitious vision at the Climate Summit: a concrete commitment to green growth and international solidarity

The Climate Summit held in Nairobi brought together many important players, including the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge. In his speech, he presented the position of the DRC in the face of current climate challenges and proposed three important measures.

First, Sama Lukonde advocated for fair and equitable access to finance for African countries to promote green growth and develop renewable energy on the continent. He also called for the reduction of economic debts incurred by African countries during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Then, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of solidarity in the field of renewable energies. He notably mentioned the Inga dam project, which is still awaiting funding, as well as the battery manufacturing project in collaboration with Zambia. Sama Lukonde insisted on the need to support these projects of common interest.

Finally, the Congolese head of government emphasized the importance of finding innovative solutions to environmental challenges. He spoke of the need to develop a new climate economy focused on forest conservation and restoration, as well as sustainable agriculture. He also called for the creation of a Climate Economics Investment Fund and a fair carbon market.

The DRC, with its vast natural resources, has enormous potential to contribute to the fight against climate change. The country has 155 million hectares of tropical forests, or 10% of the planet’s tropical forests, as well as significant energy potential and significant reserves of strategic minerals.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge’s speech at the Climate Summit highlights the DRC’s commitment and proposals to address environmental issues. Its vision of green growth, international solidarity and a climate economy helps position the country as a solution in the fight against climate change.
