“Kinshasa: Ravaging fires reveal an alarming lack of preparation”

Fire incidents in Kinshasa: an alarming lack of preparation

The city of Kinshasa has been the scene of many serious fires in recent years. Markets, public buildings and homes have been reduced to ashes, leaving residents powerless in the face of these devastating disasters. These incidents highlight shortcomings in the city’s fire brigade preparedness and response capability.

One of the main reasons for this inability to fight fires effectively is the lack of adequate equipment and materials. Fire-fighting vehicles are in short supply and often poorly maintained, making it difficult for firefighters to get to disaster sites quickly. In addition, the lack of protective suits and boots, as well as fire hydrants, limits their ability to contain the flames.

The situation is even more serious outside the commune of Gombe, where many sites do not have fire hydrants and where tankers quickly run out of water. Even in places where firefighters can intervene, many fire hydrants are blocked or disconnected from the water supply network. This situation is extremely worrying, as it means that both firefighters and residents find themselves helpless in the face of the flames.

It is also important to underline the lack of motivation of the personnel of the fire brigade due to salary delays. This situation makes it even more difficult for them to deal with fires and highlights the need for better support and recognition of their work.

Furthermore, it is alarming to note that the fire prevention policy in Kinshasa is practically non-existent. Urban planning standards, which require the presence of fire hydrants and extinguishers in buildings, are not adequately enforced. Urban markets, where many fires occur, lack the necessary security measures to protect occupants and their property.

Faced with this situation, it is essential that concrete measures be taken to strengthen the firefighting capacity in Kinshasa. This includes the acquisition of adequate fire-fighting equipment, the training and motivation of fire brigade personnel, as well as the strict application of fire safety standards in buildings and markets.

It is crucial that the authorities take this issue seriously and invest in preventing and fighting fires. The people of Kinshasa deserve to be protected from this potential danger and to feel safe in their own city.
