“CODECO: the armed militia responsible for the death of two people in the Shaba village in the DRC”

The tragic events in Shaba village, Aru territory, have aroused great emotion. Militiamen from the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) attacked the village and abducted eight people. Unfortunately, two of the hostages were killed by the militia for reasons related to their identity.

According to security sources, these two victims were considered to have “doubtful identities” by the militiamen. Once again, the violence and instability in parts of the Congo are taking a heavy toll on the innocent civilian population.

The bodies of the victims were abandoned on site, while the other hostages were released. Sadly, this brings to twenty the number of people killed by this militia during this recent incursion into the Shaba village. A spiral of violence which it is urgent to put an end to.

Despite this act of violence, some residents are beginning to return to their homes, taking advantage of the precarious calm that seems to be setting in. However, it is crucial that measures be taken to guarantee the safety of the population and put an end to the abuses committed by the armed militias.

The situation in the DRC is complex and requires a multidimensional approach to address the issues of violence and insecurity. It is essential to build the capacity of the Congolese security forces, to prosecute those responsible for these crimes and to put in place development initiatives to address the underlying problems that fuel the operations of armed groups.

Violence and armed conflict continue to cause immeasurable suffering to the Congolese people. There is an urgent need for the international community and national actors to become more engaged in finding lasting and peaceful solutions to these problems.

In these difficult times, it is important to support the Congolese population and to publicize these events, so that the need for collective action for peace and stability in the DRC is not forgotten. The voices of the victims must be heard and concrete measures must be taken to put an end to this senseless violence.

The future of the DRC depends on everyone’s willingness to work together to preserve peace and create a better future for future generations. It is time to end the violence and build a peaceful and prosperous future for Congo.
