Central African President Faustin-Archange Touadéra is currently visiting Libreville, where he is conducting a series of meetings with Gabon’s leaders. As facilitator of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Touadéra is tasked with encouraging a peaceful and inclusive transition in Gabon, following recent political events.
During his visit, Touadéra spoke with the transitional president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, as well as with the former head of state Ali Bongo. The details of their meeting have not yet been disclosed, but it is known that Ali Bongo’s state of health was one of the topics discussed.
Touadéra also participated in roundtables with various political, religious and civil society actors, with the aim of promoting an inclusive and democratic transition in Gabon. Political opponents, such as the spokesman for the opposition platform Alternance 2023, François Ndong Obiang, have expressed their desire to find a peaceful solution and to participate in building a democratic future for the country.
Civil society, represented by members of the Network of Free Organizations for Good Governance, underlined the importance of fighting against corruption and establishing strong and transparent institutions to serve the general interest.
Discussions will continue, in particular between Gabonese stakeholders, in order to set the duration of the transition and define the terms of its implementation. Touadéra said he was ready to return to Libreville if necessary, or to invite Gabonese actors to the Central African Republic, as part of his role as facilitator.
