The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, and the food situation is becoming increasingly worrying. The World Food Program (WFP) recently warned of a funding shortfall of US$567 million, representing 78% of the funds needed for the next six months.
According to Peter Musoko, WFP Country Director in the DRC, nearly 6.3 million people are internally displaced, including 6 million in the eastern provinces. The conflict in this region has devastating consequences on food security, malnutrition, health, education, access to drinking water and shelter.
The DRC faces the largest food crisis in the world, with 25.8 million people experiencing food insecurity. Massive population displacements, destruction of infrastructure and disruption of agricultural activities contribute to widespread food shortages. As a result, nearly 1.5 million people are facing emergency food insecurity.
Faced with this critical situation, the WFP is making an urgent appeal to donors for financial support in order to respond effectively to this humanitarian crisis. The World Food Program needs $728 million to strengthen its response efforts in the eastern region of the DRC, where the population is particularly vulnerable.
Flexibility in the use of funds allows WFP to purchase essential complementary food items to ensure a comprehensive nutrition approach. However, WFP operations are currently on hold due to lack of funding, which threatens the lives of millions of people in the DRC.
It is crucial that governments, donors and humanitarian partners mobilize to support the DRC in these difficult times. The people of eastern DRC need immediate attention and adequate assistance to avert a large-scale humanitarian disaster.
