“Teachers in Mbuji-Mayi threaten to boycott the start of the school year because of unpaid salaries since 2021”

Teachers in several schools in the town of Mbuji-Mayi, in Kasai-Oriental province, are facing a worrying situation. Indeed, despite their matriculation, they have not been paid since the beginning of 2021. This situation has prompted this group of teachers to threaten to boycott the start of the 2023-2024 school year if their salary situation is not regularized.

In a declaration addressed to the government, these teachers denounce the bad faith of the Ministries of Budget, Finance and EPST (Primary, Secondary and Technical Education). They point out that despite their mechanization for several years, they have not received their salaries. They feel they are victims of a flagrant social injustice.

The teachers’ collective demands that the salaries of unpaid primary and secondary school teachers in Mbuji-Mayi be paid before the start of the school year next year. Otherwise, they plan to launch a strike to make their demands heard.

They also denounce the non-mechanization of teachers identified since 2022 and their lack of budgeting. In addition, some teachers in Mbuji-Mayi are deprived of their salaries, which accentuates their financial distress.

This situation highlights the difficulties faced by many teachers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite their commitment to training future generations, they struggle to be paid regularly and fairly.

It is urgent that the government of the DRC take concrete measures to resolve this alarming situation. Teachers deserve to be respected and properly compensated for their essential work in society. Failure to do so will jeopardize the quality of education and the future of students
