Measles continues to wreak havoc in Kasai Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the latest data from the provincial health division, more than 15,525 measles cases have been recorded since the beginning of 2023, with an alarming number of 655 deaths.
The situation is particularly worrying in the health zone of Luebo, which has more than 2,000 cases and 49 deaths. Other health zones in the province, such as Kanzala, Kalonda-Ouest, Mushenge, Bulape and Kitangua, are also heavily affected by this epidemic.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection, which mainly affects children. It is characterized by fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and rash. The disease can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, which can lead to death.
Faced with this critical situation, measures have been taken to stem the spread of the disease. The provincial health division has strengthened epidemiological surveillance and routine vaccination. In addition, a campaign against measles is planned for the month of September, in order to reach more children and protect them against this devastating disease.
It is essential that parents realize the importance of having their children vaccinated against measles. Vaccinations are available free of charge in health facilities in the region, in order to guarantee access to all. Awareness and education on preventive measures, such as hand washing and hygiene, must also be reinforced to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
It is essential to mobilize all health actors, local authorities and the community to fight against this measles epidemic. Protecting children’s health is a collective responsibility, and everyone must play their part to end this preventable tragedy.
The province of Kasaï must not remain alone in this battle against measles. Additional efforts, including funding, personnel and resources, are needed to contain this outbreak and save lives. It is also crucial to consider long-term strategies to prevent future measles outbreaks, by improving access to health care and strengthening vaccination programs.
Together, we can end the suffering caused by measles and ensure a healthier future for children in Kasai and across the Democratic Republic of Congo
