Turkey ignites debate in Libya: controversy over the use of a strategic port

The debate on the use of a strategic port in Libya by Turkey is currently controversial. Videos showing two Turkish frigates displaying the Turkish flag entering the port of al-Khoms circulated on social media. However, the Libyan national unity government has denied granting Turkey the rights to use this civilian port. This controversy raises questions about transparency and diplomacy between the two countries.

Despite the Libyan government’s denial, the images of Turkish frigates in the port of al-Khoms leave little room for doubt. Turkish and Libyan security sources claimed that the Libyan interim government had ceded the rights to use this port to Ankara for a period of 99 years.

This situation has angered many demonstrators in Libya, who denounce this “new occupation” of the country by Turkey. These demonstrators also accuse the Libyan government of national unity of having lied to them by denying this transaction. The presence of hundreds of Turkish soldiers on board these military frigates heightens concerns and tensions.

The situation was exacerbated when the Dbeibah government demanded that the port of al-Khoms be emptied of commercial boats and fishing boats to carry out a development project there. This demand angered port workers and was seen as an attempt to legitimize Turkey’s military use of the port. Demonstrations have multiplied, with armed groups declaring their intention to defend themselves against “Turkish occupation” and brandishing threats against the Turkish military presence.

It should be emphasized that this is not the first time that Turkey has established a military presence in Libya. The country already has three military bases in Libya, of which that of al-Khoms is added. Economic and military agreements were signed between Ankara and Tripoli in 2019, then reviewed and corrected in 2022. These agreements notably granted Turkey the right to explore gas resources in the Mediterranean.

This situation raises many questions about Turkey’s motives in Libya and the impact of its military presence in the region. Tensions are likely to increase and jeopardize the already fragile stability in Libya.

It is important that the Libyan and Turkish governments find a diplomatic solution to resolve this dispute and ease tensions. Transparency and open communication are essential to preserve Libya’s stability and sovereignty. It is also essential to take into account the concerns and aspirations of the Libyan people in this process
