The province of Kwilu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing a measles epidemic which has already led to the death of 103 people, mainly children under the age of 5. According to Dr Aimerance Nioka, Acting Chief of Kwilu Provincial Health Division, more than 5,700 measles cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year.
Currently, 16 areas of the province are affected by the disease, including Bandundu, Bagata, Bulungu, Lusanga, Kikwit-Nord, Kikwit-Sud, Masimanimba, Mwanza, Mungindu, Kingandu, Gungu, Koshibanda, Pay Kongila and Yasa Bonga. These areas are experiencing a rapid spread of measles, endangering the health of local populations.
Despite the identification of 118 positive measles samples by the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), the response to this epidemic has not yet been implemented due to lack of resources. However, Dr. Aimerance wants to be optimistic about the organization of a forthcoming response throughout the province of Kwilu.
It is crucial that parents bring their children to health care facilities quickly as soon as measles symptoms appear. Treatment of the disease is free, and it is essential to break the chain of contamination by vaccinating all children in accordance with the vaccination schedule.
The Kwilu Provincial Health Division is also calling for public awareness and close collaboration to stem this measles outbreak. Vaccination and compliance with hygiene measures remain effective means of preventing and controlling the disease.
It is essential that health authorities and humanitarian actors mobilize the necessary resources to intensify the response against measles in Kwilu province
