During the 15th BRICS Summit, which was held recently, the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sama Lukonde, took the floor to present his country as a “solution” to the current challenges of the humanity. In his speech, he highlighted the strengths and potentials of the DRC in areas such as agriculture, renewable energy, biodiversity and energy transition. This intervention underlined the importance of the DRC in international cooperation to meet global challenges.

Development :
Prime Minister Sama Lukonde began his speech by recalling that the DRC is facing an unjust war of aggression in its eastern part. Despite this, he stressed that the country has potential and assets that make it an undeniable contribution to global challenges. He mentioned that the DRC has a vast territory with 2,345,410 km2 of arable land suitable for the development of large agricultural projects. In addition, the country has more than 50 million young people available on the labor market.

As far as the environment is concerned, the DRC is home to a forest massif of 155.5 million hectares, which represents 10% of the planet’s tropical forests and more than 60% of the forests of the Congo Basin. This natural wealth makes the DRC the 5th world power in terms of biodiversity. In addition, the country has considerable energy potential, with a photovoltaic potential estimated at 70,000 megawatts and the Inga hydroelectric dam capable of supplying more than 100,000 megawatts. The DRC also holds more than 60% of the world’s production of cobalt, an essential element for renewable energies.

The Prime Minister called for increased financial commitment in the areas of agriculture, energy and environmental protection, with a focus on semi-urban centers and villages affected by the energy transition . He pointed out that investments in these sectors will enable the world to face the current challenges in a harmonious way.
