“Celebration of World Sickle Cell Day in the DRC: an opportunity to raise awareness of the country’s social and political challenges”

The DRC celebrates today the World Day for the fight against sickle cell disease or anemia SS. The First Lady of the Republic, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, has launched an awareness campaign in favor of early detection of this genetic disease. It also provided support to the Mabanga Centre, the only public center for sickle cell treatment, with rehabilitation and renovation works which will end in October 2023. During the works, the patients are interned at the Yolo Médical center and benefit from the regular support of the Foundation of the Spouse of the Head of State. The fight against sickle cell disease is therefore a concern for the whole of Congolese society.

Furthermore, the current political situation in the DRC is marked by the appearance of new political groupings, including the National Alliance for Democracy and Support for Justice, as well as the return of Joseph Kabila to the political scene. Urban crime is also on the rise in several cities across the country, including Beni, where citizen safety is at risk. People displaced by war, under the influence of the Codeco militia in the province of Djugu, are also in a precarious situation.

Finally, the tragic sinking of the tugboat Tanganyika in the DRC, which caused the death of one person and the disappearance of four others, reminds us of the need for stricter regulations to avoid this type of accident.

The DRC therefore faces many challenges, both politically and socially. This is why it is important to raise public awareness of these issues and to work together to find lasting solutions.
