“Bandundu: flood victims live in precarious conditions, what are we doing to help?”

The victims of the recent floods which affected the city of Bandundu, capital of Kwilu, continue to alert the authorities to their precariousness. Indeed, more than a hundred people live in precarious conditions, some in houses whose walls have collapsed, or many others are welcomed by families living in promiscuity, while schools and health centers are also affected.

The priest abbot of the parish of Saint Pierre and Paul in Dima Lumbu recently made known the distress of these families and the lack of reaction on the part of the political and social authorities. According to Father Mangwata, no help has been given to these families since the natural disaster that took place last April.

Schools and health centers are also affected, and the floods have damaged 132 houses, 25 of which have completely collapsed. It should be noted that this region has already experienced such a flood in 1956, carrying away all the dwellings.

Despite the various alerts issued, no authority has yet provided a solution to help these inhabitants who live in a very difficult situation. The locality of Dima Lumbu has nearly 6,000 inhabitants, located 12 km from downtown Bandundu.

It is important for provincial authorities and international organizations to lend their support and find solutions to reduce the precariousness of these affected families. Let’s hope that a solution will be found quickly to relieve the suffering of the inhabitants.
