“Shipwreck in the DRC: 2 dead and 4 missing, the search continues”

On June 19, 2023, the DRC is once again marked by tragedy. A large capacity boat linking Kalemie to Kigoma, Bujumbura and Uvira sank on the night of June 15 to 16 off Kabimba, in the province of Tanganyika.

The reasons for this tragedy are linked to the rupture of a propeller shaft coupled to the gearbox which fell into the water. On board, 15 crew members and 2 passengers, including the economic operator. Help quickly intervened, including a Burundian boat from Zambia, saving 11 people but deploring 4 missing and two dead bodies, including that of the mechanic.

According to the maritime commissioner of the port of Kalundu in Uvira, Amani Mangazi, never such a case had occurred on Lake Tanganyika. The search continues to find the other missing persons.

On this sad day, the DRC remains marked by events of all kinds. The violence in North Kivu continues to escalate, as does the Codeco movement which threatens to trigger a genocide. As for football, it offers a glimmer of hope for peace in the DRC, with FC Hopimasi beating AS Masisi in the quarter-finals of the Valentin Kaneno Peace Tournament. The situation of Central African refugees is also worrying, as is the reactivation of military operations in the province of Lituari to put an end to the killings of civilians.

In the midst of these different events, IOB SARL continues to establish itself as an essential reference in mining subcontracting in the DRC. Kibali Gold Mining is also hailed for its example of environmental preservation in the world of mining in the DRC.

The death of journalist Mbuyi Tshibuabua marks a deep sadness for press freedom in the DRC.

Finally, the DRC remains on high alert after the terrorist attack on the Congolese border.

The DRC is a country that lives to the rhythm of tragedies but continues to move forward, despite everything
