The political party Together for the Republic of Moïse Katumbi has just taken an important decision in view of the next municipal elections. In a correspondence addressed to the provincial coordinators, federal presidents and agents, the party announced that the lists of candidates must henceforth respect perfect parity between women and men.
This measure aims to guarantee equitable representation of both sexes in municipal bodies. According to the document sent by the party, the lists should be made up of 50% women and 50% men. Even in the case of an odd number of seats, a woman will have to be lined up to make up this difference.
By taking this decision, the party Together for the Republic wishes to play an active role in the promotion of gender equality in politics. Indeed, statistics show that women are vastly underrepresented in national and local assemblies in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This measure aims to remedy this situation and encourage the political participation of women.
The note sent by the party also mentions the strategy of the lists, which will be based on the reality of the establishment of the party in each commune. Collaboration with partners from the political opposition is also planned.
It is interesting to note that this decision comes at a time when national legislative candidacies have shown a flagrant imbalance between men and women. Out of a total of 23,653 applications declared admissible by the CENI, only 3,955 are women, i.e. only 17% of the applications.
With this measure, the Together for the Republic party demonstrates its desire to take concrete action to promote the political participation of women and guarantee equitable representation in municipal bodies. He thus hopes to contribute to the strengthening of democracy and the construction of a more inclusive society in the Democratic Republic of Congo
