“SOS: Displaced Persons Crisis in Masisi – A Desperate Situation Requires Urgent Response!”

News: The challenges of displaced people in Masisi territory

In Masisi territory, North Kivu, the situation of displaced people is precarious and alarming. Indeed, approximately 1,297 households of displaced persons have been living in difficult conditions for more than a year in the Bihito sites. Unfortunately, in recent months, five people, including two children, have lost their lives due to disease and malnutrition.

These displaced persons arrived from the localities of Karenga in the Bashali Mokoto groupement, from the village of Burungu and also from Kiwanja in the territory of Rutshuru. They settled in temporary sites such as the schools of Musoro, Bujiri and the Lushebere Institute.

Civil society in Masisi territory is sounding the alarm about this extremely serious situation. The testimonies report cases of death and children who suffer from severe malnutrition. Malnutrition has become a major problem and the situation is the same in all other IDP sites across Masisi territory.

This precariousness of displaced people raises concerns about the start of the school year in several towns in Masisi. Indeed, the presence of many displaced persons and the abandonment of certain areas due to insecurity make the situation even more difficult.

It is necessary to take urgent measures to come to the aid of these displaced persons who live in inhumane conditions. It is essential to provide adequate food assistance, appropriate medical care and put in place durable solutions for their social reintegration.

The situation of displaced people in Masisi territory is a stark reminder of the reality of persistent insecurity in the DRC. It is time for the competent authorities and the international community to mobilize to find long-term solutions to protect these vulnerable people and offer them a better future
