“Mining exports and agriculture in the DRC: a new strategy to diversify the economy”

The Democratic Republic of Congo opened its DRC Mining Week this Tuesday, June 14, under the theme “Recognizing the trophies and victories of the mining industry in the DRC and outside”. The Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, present for the occasion, spoke of the importance of the mining sector as well as the need to boost agricultural production in the DRC.

The Head of Government stressed that taxes in the mining sector could be directed towards agriculture in order to create more added value. He also insisted on the need for a forum on the scale of DRC Mining Week for other important economic sectors of the country, such as agriculture for example.

Beyond reorganizing the allocation of funds, the Government has also underlined the relevance of local processing in order to ensure food security, cope with external competition and propel the agricultural sector. Several strategies have already been mentioned by the Provincial Governors for the promotion of industrialization and agriculture in the DRC.

The initiative has been welcomed by citizens and economic development specialists who are calling for better protection of the DRC’s economic future. Thus, it turns out that the orientation of certain taxes which weighed down the exporters of the mining sector, could be a solution to inject capital into other sectors of the economy such as agriculture, which would bring the long awaited solutions. faced with the monopoly experienced by the mining sector in the DRC.

In conclusion, only the diversification of the economy can offer the population a future other than the one that awaits it today.
