The Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to face a serious humanitarian crisis, caused in large part by the violence of the armed groups that plague the country. Faced with this situation, the members of the United Nations Security Council recently called for the participation of all Congolese armed groups in the Nairobi process to find political solutions. They also called on foreign armed groups to return to their country of origin.
This statement follows the attack perpetrated on June 11 and 12, 2023 against the Lala IDP camp in Ituri province. This attack, which was attributed to members of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO), left at least 45 dead and 10 injured. Council members called for a prompt investigation into this incident and stressed that deliberate attacks on civilians could constitute war crimes.
In addition to the difficult security situation, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is also facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern over this crisis and called on Member States and international and regional organizations to respond quickly to humanitarian assistance needs.
