Women at the heart of humanitarian action: an essential commitment in South Kivu and Maniema

Dossier: Women, key players in humanitarian action in South Kivu and Maniema

In the South Kivu and Maniema region, women play an essential role in humanitarian action. This is emphasized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCA), which strongly encourages women to continue their humanitarian initiatives. Godelieve Sipula, in charge of humanitarian affairs at OCHA/South Kivu, recently praised their commitment during the celebration of awareness days on the humanitarian response in Bukavu.

It is important to highlight the vital role that women play in the communities of this region, which has long remained in the shadows. They provide food and non-food aid to victims of various natural disasters that have struck the region. Their presence on the ground is essential to meet the urgent needs of the affected populations.

Women, exemplary actors of solidarity, deserve all our support and encouragement. Humanitarian actors will continue to be present as long as there are crises. However, it is necessary that other partners join this momentum and support these women in their humanitarian actions at different levels.

In order to further enhance their commitment, several events have been organised. In addition to the march and the leisure football match involving women’s organizations, UN agencies and international NGOs, a conference and an open day are planned for this Saturday at the headquarters of the World Food Program (WFP) in Bukavu.

It is therefore essential to recognize and support the work of women in humanitarian action. Their initiatives are a source of inspiration for the international community and contribute to improving the situation in regions affected by humanitarian crises. Let’s encourage them to continue their essential work and to be agents of change in their community.
