Insecurity in Niger: a worrying situation
Since the coup in Niger at the end of July, the security situation in the country has deteriorated considerably. Several sources report an increase in insecurity, particularly in the west of the country, especially in the border region of the “three borders”. Between Tuesday and Wednesday August 16, at least 28 civilians were killed in these attacks, adding to the losses suffered by soldiers and civilians in terrorist attacks.
This resurgence of jihadist attacks is a source of concern for observers. Indeed, the suspension of military cooperation between France and Niger has deprived the national army of the support of the French army. Joint operations are no longer carried out, planes and drones no longer provide support, leaving a vacuum that terrorist groups exploit.
In addition, the threats of armed intervention by ECOWAS have led to a reduction in the military presence in western Niger. Military units have been recalled to Niamey, which is causing a drop in responsiveness to armed groups. The jihadists take advantage of this security isolation and gain freedom of movement. The Islamic State is establishing itself in the region of the three borders, while the Jnim extends its influence towards the south.
This worrying situation could lead to a lasting establishment of jihadists in Niger, with the risk of seeing their attacks spread even further. Some experts even fear the creation of gray areas, partially controlled by armed groups, not only in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, but also in war-torn Sudan. This destabilization could lead to a contagion of armed movements towards the countries of the Gulf of Guinea.
Faced with these risks, it is crucial that measures be taken to strengthen international cooperation and support the Nigerien army in its fight against terrorist groups. The situation in Niger requires urgent action to contain this escalation of insecurity and prevent adverse consequences on regional stability.
It is important to be regularly informed about the evolution of this situation and to support actions aimed at restoring peace and security in Niger.
