“The DRC is embarking on a historic withdrawal of MONUSCO, the challenges to be met for the sovereignty of the country”

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently working on the withdrawal plan of the UN Mission in the DRC (Monusco), present for more than twenty years in the country. According to the Ministry of Communication and Media, a constructive exchange with the Deputy Secretary of the United Nations (UN) in charge of peacekeeping, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, took place to allow the rise of the State in the region. The Congolese authorities consider this withdrawal, scheduled in six months, as a historic step. The Congolese government has been committed since November 15, 2022 to working on a Monusco withdrawal plan, pushed by the Congolese population, after the unfortunate events experienced by the country for a few months.

The withdrawal plan, a key document in the return to sovereignty of the DRC, comes with its share of challenges: the Congolese government must in particular work on the effectiveness of its strategy of neutralizing armed groups in the east of the country, a very tense for more than two decades. Since the meeting between the President of the Republic and the Congolese authorities in November 2022, discussions between the Congolese government and Monusco have continued to shorten the timeframe for this long-awaited withdrawal.

The DRC, home to many tensions and conflicts for years, continues to work for its reconstruction, its development and its international influence. The next few months will be crucial for the country, especially with the withdrawal of Monusco, but also with the many events and meetings that will support the development of its region.
