Lubumbashi Forum: Towards a national policy for the prevention of community and customary conflicts in the DRC

Communal and customary conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are a complex and frequent subject. The province of Haut-Katanga is no exception to this problem. To find lasting solutions, a consultative forum was organized in Lubumbashi from August 18 to 20, with the aim of developing a national policy for the prevention and resolution of these conflicts.

This forum brought together participants from different backgrounds, such as customary chiefs, traditional authorities and territorial administrators. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Customary Affairs, the works were launched by the Provincial Minister of the Interior and Security of Haut-Katanga, Héritier Kyungu Kibwe, on behalf of Governor Jacques Kyabula.

The objective of this forum was to put in place a national policy aimed at guaranteeing the stability and well-being of local communities. The participants were asked to analyze the problems related to customary affairs and to propose concrete solutions to eliminate communal and customary conflicts in society.

To support this work, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) provided its expertise and technical support. This UN agency reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to resolving conflicts and promoting sustainable development.

This consultative forum represents an important step in the search for lasting solutions to prevent and resolve community and customary conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By bringing together the key players in society, it makes it possible to put in place a national policy that will promote the stability and development of local communities. With the support of UNDP and the international community, it is possible to hope for significant progress in resolving these conflicts and building a better future for all
