Growing Insecurity in Kasindi: New Civil Society Calls for Urgent State Intervention

Kasindi, a small town bordering Uganda, located in the territory of Beni, in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is currently facing increased insecurity. The New Civil Society of Ruwenzori, a local organization, is sounding the alarm and calling on the State to provide logistical means to the Kasindi National Police to deal with this worrying situation.

The president of the New Civil Society, Meleki Mulala, is worried about the lack of resources of the national police in this region. He denounces the fact that the bandits have been causing trouble for two weeks, but that the police attribute their delay in intervention to the lack of fuel in his vehicle. He considers that it is inconceivable that an entity like Kasindi, located on the border, does not have the necessary means to ensure the security of its population and its property.

Indeed, MONUSCO, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC, regularly supplies fuel to the national police in Kasindi, but there seems to have been a break in these supplies lately. However, according to MONUSCO police, these supplies should resume soon.

Faced with this situation, the New Civil Society of Ruwenzori calls for the vigilance and mobilization of the population of Kasindi. It also invites the population to denounce any criminal hidden within the community. Bandits often operate by disguising themselves in uniforms similar to those of the armed forces or the police, which makes it difficult to identify them. It is therefore important that each member of the community participates in security by reporting any suspicious activity to the competent authorities.

Three weeks ago, the national police arrested seven people in Kasindi for non-compliance with hygiene measures. This shows that despite the challenges it faces, the Kasindi Police are active in the fight against insecurity and crime.

It is essential that the State respond to the call of the New Civil Society of Ruwenzori and provide the necessary logistical means to the national police of Kasindi. This will strengthen security in this border region and protect the population against criminal acts. Security is a key issue for the development and stability of a community, and it is the responsibility of the State to guarantee the security of its citizens
