“Government of Kasaï Oriental launches an awareness campaign to eradicate the abuse of Plumpy’nut and therapeutic milk in schools”

The provincial government of Kasai Oriental recently launched an awareness campaign against the abusive consumption of Plumpy’nut and therapeutic milk in schools. This initiative aims to fight against the trafficking of these pharmaceutical products which are intended only for malnourished children.

The governor of the province, Patrick Mathias Kabeya Matshi, kicked off this campaign in the presence of local political and administrative authorities. He welcomed UNICEF’s commitment against the sale and consumption of these therapeutic foods by healthy people. The provincial government of Kasai Oriental promises severe sanctions against the recalcitrant to enforce the use of therapeutic foods for their purpose.

Plumpy’nut Pasta and Therapeutic Milk are peanut-based products and contain added minerals and vitamins, making it an excellent source of protein and energy for malnourished children. They play a crucial role in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition.

The NGO “Action contre la Faim” recalls that ready-to-use therapeutic foods, or RUTF, are considered an essential type of therapeutic food in the community treatment of uncomplicated forms of severe acute malnutrition.

The awareness campaign launched by the provincial government of Kasai Oriental is structured over a period of three months, from June to August 2023. It is important to emphasize that this measure must help to stop the abusive marketing of these pharmaceutical products intended solely for save malnourished children
