Ten years after the double assassination of journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon in Kidal, Mali, RFI radio pays tribute to these committed reporters. As part of the tenth edition of the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship, RFI is launching a call for applications to train ten young journalists and ten young African technicians.
This scholarship, created in memory of the two journalists murdered in 2013, aims to transmit their passion for reporting and their professionalism to new generations of journalists on the African continent. Applications are open to young journalists and technicians under the age of 35, residing in one of the 25 French-speaking countries of Africa.
The selected candidates will participate in a training in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from October 16 to 29, 2023. This training will include practical workshops that will lead to the production of a report for journalists and a sound element for technicians. . A jury made up of representatives from RFI, the Ivorian press, the Sciences Po School of Journalism and INA will select a winner in each category.
The Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship will be awarded on November 2, the date declared by the United Nations as the “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Committed against Journalists”. The winners will also benefit from a one-month training in Paris.
To participate, candidates must download the participation form from the RFI website, and send it along with their CV, a cover letter and a report or a sound element representative of their work.
This RFI initiative is a poignant reminder of the importance of journalism and the risks faced by reporters who strive to cover the news in sometimes dangerous contexts. By paying tribute to Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon and offering a training opportunity to young journalists, RFI is helping to perpetuate their legacy and promote excellence in African journalism
