Tensions between the DRC and Kenya: The withdrawal of the EAC Regional Force in question.

Title of the article: Tensions between the DRC and Kenya over the withdrawal of the EAC Regional Force

Kenyan President William Ruto has sent a mission to Kinshasa to discuss with President Tshisekedi the withdrawal of the East African Community (EAC) Regional Force deployed in eastern DRC. This issue is of the utmost concern to both countries.

Indeed, Kinshasa wants the departure of this Regional Force which it considers to have refused – against the resolutions of the Heads of State of the EAC – to fight the rebels of the M23. However, during the meeting of Heads of State of the sub-region gathered in Bujumbura last May, the mandate of the EAC Force was extended until 8 September.

EAC troops contribute to stability in eastern DRC. If their departure takes place, it could lead to disruption and increased insecurity in this already very fragile region.

In addition, other current topics in the DRC are covered on Fatshimetrei’s blog, such as the fight against child labor in Kisangani, the war crimes reported by Human Rights Watch, or the launch of a week environment to fight against plastic pollution in Butembo.

The “Repop” political movement was also launched, with the aim of seizing power and redefining the country’s politics.

The tension is also palpable with regard to the M23 rebellion, supported by Rwanda, responsible for rapes and abuses according to Human Rights Watch.

Finally, the health situation in the DRC is critical, in particular because of the insecurity which hinders the necessary blood donations.

The news in the DRC is therefore very dense and deserves to be followed closely.
