North Kivu: Accusations of police negligence during a trial for treason and possession of weapons of war

The province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a region that often makes the news for various reasons. Recently, a ministry officer accused the provincial police officials of “lightness and negligence” in their mission to secure the population and their property. This accusation came during the hearing on Tuesday, June 13 following the trial for treason and illegal possession of weapons of war of Édouard Mwangachuchu and his co-defendant, suspicions of maintaining links with the rebels of the M23.

The testimony of the provincial commissioner of the North Kivu PNC during the hearing aroused the indignation of the public prosecutor’s officer who denounced the negligence and lightness in the management of the police in this region. The weapons of war were discovered in the residence of Édouard Mwangachuchu in Kinshasa and in the premises of his company SMB in Masisi in North Kivu. The defendants are prosecuted for treason, participation in an insurrectionary movement, espionage and illegal possession of weapons of war.

Despite efforts to bring peace to the DRC, insecurity persists in some regions, including North Kivu, which has faced armed conflict for many years. Indeed, the massacres in this region were reported by Human Rights Watch, which called for the intervention of the international community to bring peace to the region. Tension has also risen in Kamako and civil society has called for state intervention to protect the Anamongo community.

On the other hand, an important step has recently been taken towards universal health coverage in the DRC, despite the challenges of governance. Moreover, the Congolese musician artist Fabrice Mumpfiritsa called for peace during his concert in Goma while the city of Butembo launched an environmental week to fight against plastic pollution. However, the World Day Against Child Labor revealed the sad reality in Kisangani, where children are exploited to earn a living.

In short, the news in the DRC continues to highlight the challenges of governance, security and human rights. Efforts to establish a peaceful and sustainable environment in regions affected by armed conflict must be continued in order to improve the situation of the country and its citizens.
